In order to secure this knowledge of alien visitors and prevent foreign countries from learning this vital secret and get an edge on the United States, President Harry S. Truman signed a finding that basically said that no one (including a chief executive) was to be in possession of or disclose the finding without a "need to know" clearance which was above Top Secret. Knowledge of the finding was limited to only a select few within the intelligence and scientific community of the government and there would be no official acknowledgment.

Project BLUE BOOK, was taken over by the CIA in 1953 as a public experiment and used as a debunking tool to discount the extraterrestrial reality and possibly to quash any attempts by the KGB and GRU to glean any technological or defense secrets from it.

MJ-12 included spinoff projects that were obviously equally sensitive activities of the CIA such as PARASITE, PARHELION, ENVIRO, PSYOP, GREEN, SPIKE, and HOUSE CLEANING.  Other sensitive and covert programs such as MK ULTRA, ARTICHOKE and DOMESTIC all appear to have been valid projects associated with MJ-12.

MJ-12 first achieved international fame in mid-1987. It was then that UFOlogist William L. Moore and two associates made public three “Top Secret” documents which indicated that President Harry Truman had created a super-secret MJ-12 group forty years earlier to deal with extraterrestrial visitors. Supposedly Truman’s action was prompted by the crashed-ET craft that had been covertly recovered near Roswell in mid-1947.

Recently, a large batch of additional “Top Secret Majestic Documents” have emerged, provided by another UFOlogist named Tim Cooper, who claims he obtained them from several covert sources. Their authenticity has been endorsed by Robert Wood, a respected, retired McDonnell Douglas scientist.

It was not until nearly seven years after release of the original MJ-12 documents that a new “MJ-12 document” surfaced on March 14, 1994. On that date, Don Berliner, a long-time UFOlogist, received in the mail an undeveloped roll of 35 mm film from an anonymous source.

When the film was processed, Berliner found photos of what purported to be copies of pages from a “Top Secret/MAJIC/Eyes Only” special operations manual (SOM 1-01) intended to inform military crews how to recover crashed saucers and their ET crews.

Robert Wood had strongly endorsed the authenticity of the documents, although Wood admitted that there were flaws in them. But he claimed that these anomalies “tend to indicate authenticity, Document hoaxers generally try to make sure they are perfect.”

Wood’s good friend, UFO lecturer Stanton Friedman, remains one of the staunchest supporters of these original MJ-12 document.

There are those in the UFOology community, such as prominent voice Stanton Friedman, who still believe that the documents are real, and continue to argue the point. There have even been further documents that have surfaced claiming to support the originals.

Majestic 12 is still alive and thoroughly ingrained into the larger UFO narrative at this point, appearing in some form or another in shows like The X-Files, and movies like Men in Black.
